Design studio IDEO has created a device for healthcare startup Teal Health that enables women to self-collect samples required for cervical cancer screening in the privacy and comfort of their own homes.
On the facades of the theatre and the exhibition space, the studio created abstract images of mountain sceneries that mimic a traditional Chinese brushstroke painting and were designed to further emphasise the scenic nature of the project.
"Eco-anxiety is very close to general anxiety disorder in that you can have physiological reactions like heart palpitations, stomach pain and headaches.
"We had to use all existing openings — sliding doors and skylights in vaulted ceilings — but there was no rhythm.
These included the restoration of the brutalist Park Hill Estate in Sheffield, the conversion of the 18th-century Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings and the transformation of a Victorian terrace into the Bradbury Works workspace.
According to the studio, the portals playfully reinterpret "the solemnity of the doors of bourgeois houses", with their scale and materiality creating a focal point whilst maintaining an open and fluid connection between the spaces.
My own lived experience as a woman in north London likely resonates with many women and others who feel marginalised in different urban spaces around the world: only using the shortcut alley near my house when it's light, cutting short a phone call taken in a local park due to being verbally harassed, giving up an activity I loved (singing in a choir) because I'd be catcalled on my way home every week.
